What is CNC Lathe Machine

A CNC lathe machine is a simple CNC machine with equipped CNC control panels used for the CNC turning process and services. CNC lathe machines are also referred to as live tooling lathe. The CNC controller mainly controls all the functions of the CNC lathe machine.

The machine uses a modern CNC machine tool, machining operations, turning centers, and materials such as aluminum, steel, and brass to improve the productivity and quality of the CNC turning parts.

The CNC lathe machine has a strong capacity and improves efficiency for CNC machining. CNC machining also has short lead times providing higher precision for the desired shape and CNC lathe parts by using various material. A simple lathe machine can use for processes such as drilling, hard CNC turning service, tapered turning, grooving, etc

6 Main Parts of CNC Lathes

CNC Lathe machine is composed of various parts that work together to perform the specific machining operations and functions of the CNC machine. Lathe machines have two tool holders:

  1. Special tool holders
  2. General tool holders

The followings are the main parts and components of the CNC lathe machine.

Machine Bed

The machine Bed is one of the main parts of the CNC Lathe machine. The machine bed mainly forms the main base of the CNC Lathe machine. Various parts of the CNC machine are mounted on the machine bed.

During the working of the CNC Lathe machine, the CNC machine bed cannot move or vibrate. This is because the CNC lathe machine uses a foundation that makes the bottom of the machine stationary. In this way, the machine bed is not affected during functioning.

Main Spindle

It is the prominent component of the CNC Lathe machine. It mainly comprises a drive and assembly system. Main Spindle is some moving parts of the machine tool. These moving parts include gears, motors, and chuck. It also has a C-axis drive which mainly aids in positioning the material.

Chuck

The chuck is mainly involved in gripping the machined parts and is composed of different parts. The chuck has jaws mounted on it, mainly protecting the CNC components and CNC machine. Chuck can easily hold parts having hexagonal and cylindrical shapes.

Headstock

The headstock is considered the main motor of the CNC machine.  It is located on the left side of the CNC lathe machine and mainly involves driving its spindle. It is equipped with other components of a CNC Lathe machine. These components include spindles, gear speed control, feed controllers, and chucks.

The master spindle is considered the machine's main feature, with a chuck mounted. To run the headstock, the workpiece is spun at a specific speed. Tailstock provides grip during operations such as turning, threading, and noodling.

Feedscrew

It is involved in feeding the screw thread cutting operation and CNC operation by transmitting the power to the carriage from the headstock.  The operation of the feed rod is similar to the lead screw because it helps the carriage move in the right to left and left to right directions.

Tool Turret

The tool turret is the part of the CNC lathe machine on which the instrument is mounted. It varies in shape and is responsible for the plastic parts component machining. The tool turret commonly has two axis movements, including the x and set.

The function of CNC Lathe

The main function of the CNC Lathe machine is the manufacturing of turning plastic parts of desired shapes and high precision using material such as aluminum and brass. During the CNC machining process, the parts to be machined are held on the chuck located on the spindle and are rotated. During rotation, the undesired remove material such as aluminum by a cutting tool is fed to the bar stock, and the turning parts with desired shapes are created.

CNC lathe can be equipped with toolings that can create holes in the workpiece, and turned parts can leave visible tool marks and bead blasting. The martial used for turned parts are brass, aluminum, steel, copper, stainless steel, and titanium.

To manufacture complex CNC turned parts, typically Swiss-type lathes can be set up for repeatability and make anything from rapid prototyping to high volume production and strictly required tolerances.

CNC turned parts manufactured by CNC lathe ensure that your parts will be optimized and fit your requirements. CNC turning process uses for shafts, pins, and spacers. CNC machining can improve functionality and reduce the cost of CNC turned parts. It improves its cost-effectiveness, and makes good for different operations. Different CNC machining operations and materials can perform on live tooling lathes, such as boring, knurling, facing, and drilling

CNC Lathe tools

Some machine tools having CNC are mills, shapers, CNC lathes, and welding, and CNC machines are used in various industries. The automotive industry is one of these industries. CNC lathes have two main types, i.e., 2-axis CNC lathes and Swiss-type lathes. Feed is the direction and speed of the tool moving along the workpiece.

Different types of mechanisms and machining operations are used in CNC Lathe machines. The machines use a subtractive method and materials to manufacture the desired shape and load a blank bar of stock material into the chunk. The followings are the main CNC Lathe instruments typically used in CNC machining to make prototyping.

Sharp tools

Teflon is a versatile material that can be machined with various tools such as end mills. In particular, sharp tools work well when machining thermoplastic polymers such as PTFE, nylon, and acrylic. This is because sharp tools produce clean cuts, essential when machining Teflon since it is a non-stick material.

Additionally, sharp tools help to reduce the amount of friction between the tool and the material, which is also essential when machining Teflon.

1- Facing tool

A facing tool is mainly used for cutting flat surfaces at a right angle to the rotational axis of the workpiece.

2- Parting tool

It is a turning tool that cuts various pieces of materials from the workpiece.

3- Chamfering tools

Chamfering tools create furrows or hazardous or smooth edges on the workpiece.

4- Finish turning tools

This type of turning tool is used to remove small parts from the workpiece resulting in an accurate and smooth surface finish of the end product. For CNC turning parts, you can choose brass, stainless steel, and titanium materials. Stainless steel parts have chemical corrosion resistance and are suitable for various equipment.

5- Thread Cutting Tool

It is used to cut the threads on the lathe parts and is available in two forms. i.e., external and internal thread cutting.

6- Knurling Tool

The knurling tool creates a definite pattern in round sections resulting in the production of knurled lathe parts by using CNC machines.

7- Boring Tool

Boring tools enlarge holes in the parts or workpieces on a CNC machine for the manufacturing industry.

8- Rough Turning Tool

The CNC machining process mainly removed the larger parts of the workpiece in a very less interval of time.

Conclusion

CNC Lathe machines are controlled by a computer that produces turning machining parts of higher quality and smooth surface finish at a low cost. The manufacturing of metals and plastics parts through material selection and design considerations is possible due to CNC turning and machining.

It is composed of different parts that work together for the production of various turning parts by using the CNC Lathe operation.
