What is CNC Milling ?

CNC milling is a manufacturing process that uses a cutting tool mounted on a rotating spindle to selectively remove material from a block of raw substrate. The workpiece is rigidly mounted to a table, and this table moves or rotates on different planes so the tool can work at many angles. Sophisticated CNC milling machines can have 5 or more axes of independent motion to make more complex shapes or to avoid having to move the workpiece to a separate machine.


How does CNC Milling work?

Compared with CNC machining centers, in addition to the lack of automatic tool changer and tool magazine, CNC milling machines are similar to CNC machining centers in other aspects, and can also drill, ream, countersink bore and tapping, etc., but it is mainly used for milling of the workpiece.CNC mill is controlled with G-Code created through CAM software.The CNC machining G code tells the Cartesian position coordinates of the machining tool of the CNC machine tool, and controls the feed speed and spindle speed of the tool, as well as the tool changer, coolant and other functions.


Types of parts that can be processed by CNC milling machines

Surface Milling

Surface milling, also known as plain milling, means machining surface is parallel and perpendicular to the horizontal plane.At present, the vast majority of parts processed on CNC milling machines are surface milling parts.They can be processed only by the two-coordinate linkage of a 3 axes CNC milling machine.

Angle Milling

The processing surface and the horizontal plane changes continuously are called Angel milling.The angle milling surface could not be expaned into the flat surface, so it is best to use 3 aexs, 4 axes and 5 axes CNC milling machines for processing.

Form Milling

Form milling, also knows as curved surface milling, means the machining surface is the irregular surface, like curved surface. The machined surface cannot be expanded into a plane; the other is that the machined surface and the milling cutter are always in point contact. Such parts generally use a 3-axis CNC milling machine.

2.What is the difference between CNC Milling and CNC Turning?

1) Different working principles.
2) Different programming methods.
Determined by the working mode, the programming of the CNC tuning only needs to input two coordinates:xy2 axis, the milling machine needs to input 3 coordinates, xyz3 axis.
3) Different working scope.
A lathe can be used for turning axles, grooves, end faces, hollows, and threads; a milling machine can mill surface, angle and form.

3.Different types of CNC milling machines

CNC mills are often defined by their number of axes. More axes mean they can move their tool and/or workpiece in a greater number of ways, giving greater cutting flexibility and the ability to make more complex parts in a shorter time.
3-axis: Standard CNC mills have 3 axes, allowing the spindle (and attached cutting tool) to travel along the X, Y and Z axes. If the cutting tool cannot reach an area of the part, the part must be removed and manually rotated.
4-axis: Some CNC mills incorporate an extra degree of movement by rotating on a vertical axis. This enables greater flexibility and the ability to create more complex parts.
5-axis: The most advanced type of widely used CNC mill is the 5-axis mill, which incorporates two extra degrees of movement, often by adding rotation to both the worktable and spindle. Parts usually don’t require multiple setups, since the mill can manipulate them into different positions.
